Pakenham was named after Sir Edward Pakenham and was established in the 1800’s around the railway station enroute to Gippsland. Farms were established growing fruit and vegetables as well as dairying, and processing plants were constructed.
It wasn’t until the mid-1960s when Pakenham emerged as the major township. Today the tourist industry is important.
