Morwell and surrounds is famous for having one of the biggest brown coal reserves in the world and is the epicentre of Victoria’s electricity industry.
In the 1870s the railway line from Melbourne to Sale was constructed and around ten traders operated in Morwell including a brickworks, pottery, butter factory and schools. Morwell’s evolution was fostered following the opening of the Yallourn open cut mine and power station in the 1920s, as well as the Paper Mill in 1930s, which provided Morwell with opportunities for employment and trade.
Morwell lies in the civic heart of the Latrobe Valley roughly 150km East of Melbourne and is one of Australia’s key industrial, electricity generation and commercial centres. Like Traralgon, the big regional town boasts a bustling entertainment scene, well-off in festivals and lively cultural experiences.
Less than two hour’s drive from Melbourne’s CBD Morwell residents and visitors can utilise the Prices Freeway. Alternatively, there is the V/Line train route from Bairnsdale through to Southern Cross Station.
Morwell has a good choice of kindergartens, childcare centres, several primary schools and a secondary school. Tertiary education is also available including GippsTAFE and Federation University.
