Gisborne was named after H.F. Gisborne, the Victorian Crown Lands Commissioner in Port Phillip District. In 1860 the area was declared as a district that had 13 hotels and later in 1871 it was declared a shire. It wasn’t until 1970 when the Tullamarine Freeway opened so people could travel to Gisborne from Metro Melbourne.
Present day Gisborne still has the village character from the past. A perfect combination of old and new/rural and suburban. Roam the leafy streets full
of modern cafes and boutiques, heritage buildings and country homesteads.
Gisborne is situated 54 km north-west of Melbourne, a perfect place for those seeking a tree-change. As the largest town in the Macedon Ranges that possess a semi-rural character and a wealth of open spaces with the amenities of a modern town. Residents or travellers commuting from Melbourne can utilise Gisborne’s train station and nearby Calder Freeway. There are also local bus services available in the town.
