Berwick was once considered to be a small agricultural and pastoral area in the 1800s. By mid 1850s the land was subdivided and businesses including a post office, hotel and more opened. Farmers grew wheat, barley and potatoes with a flour mill operating. Later farmers moved onto dairy farming and cheese making.
