Batesford is named after two brothers Alfred and John Bates, established in the 1830’s. Not long after settling the brothers moved on and Dr John Learmonth obtained a large parcel of Batesford. The doctor constructed the Laurence Park homestead, today the homestead is on the Register of National Estate.
Located only 67km south-west of Melbourne’s CBD, Batesford has views of the picturesque Moorabool River. The town is a part of the designated growth region, new housing developments and plans such as expanding arterial roads and building new shopping centres and local amenities.
Batesford is situated just off the Midland Highway, which goes onto Ballarat and Geelong. For public transport the North Geelong Train Station and travel on the V-Line.
Batesford has ample great schooling options from kindergarten to primary and secondary schools. For further education there is Deakin and Victoria University campuses that are no more than a 30-minute drive.
The Batesford Hotel was established in the 1800s, operating as a pub, dining room and function venue. The family-run business focuses on fresh, seasonal and local produce. Open from Wednesday to Sunday, it’s a place where people flock for the good food, wine and company.
Explore Dog Rocks Reserve, the Devonian granite boulders are said to resemble lying dogs. Covering 15.75 hectares the property is popular for rock climbing as well as photographers capturing the landscape, sunsets and stargazing.
Chocolate lovers, Moorabool Valley Chocolate is the perfect place for you! Wednesday to Friday you can watch chocolatiers work through the viewing window. They specialise in hand-painted chocolate and offer an extensive range of chocolates alongside traditional confectionery. Open from Tuesday to Saturday from 10:30am to 5pm.
