Traralgon settled in the 1840s as an agricultural and pastoral centre. The town thrived during the gold rush due to its proximity on the road from Melbourne to Sale. Today you can see the remnants of this era reflected in the architecture of the town including the Traralgon Post Office, Ryan’s Hotel and Ostler House. The European settlers noted the high rainfall and fruitful land of the valley, this area was established as a farming area. Traralgon has developed to service Victoria’s energy and the local neighbouring agricultural, pastoral, papermaking, and timber industries.
Traralgon is situated in the heart of Gippsland roughly 160km East of Melbourne. As the largest and fastest-growing town in Latrobe City, Traralgon showcases wide tree-lined picturesque streets, lush gardens and spacious parklands. Take a leisurely stroll and see the Traralgon sights! Starting at the Visitor Information Centre see the Star Hotel, travel along Grey Street and through the centre of town and back again. The 90 minute walk has thirty places of interest which are worth pausing at.
If you’re a sport fanatic person, Traralgon is the rural town for you! It hosts a number of netball, AFLW and AFL events throughout the year. In January Traralgon hosts the AGL Loy Yang Traralgon International at the Traralgon Tennis Courts.
