Single or double storey: what should you choose? Part 1

When looking to design your dream home, one of the first decisions you need to make is choosing between a single or double storey design. There are many factors to consider which fall on our individual living needs.

Here are some of the factors to consider when making your choice:

Block size

Consider how much space you would like on your block, outside of the home. If you have a smaller block, a double storey design may be the answer, as it allows you to create more space over the area of land, which means your land footprint is reduced without needing to compromise too heavily on space and flexibility.

Family size

Whether you have a family already, or it’s on your future radar, you need to consider the pros and cons of single vs double storey living.

Depending on how big your family is (or might be), you’ll have specific space needs in terms of Bedrooms and Living areas. Additional Living rooms upstairs provide older kids a space to themselves, or parents having flexibility for a space that doesn’t disturb little ones when they go to bed.

There are advantages to single storey designs, avoiding stairs being one of them. They can be hazardous with young ones, and you’ll need to consider using child safety gates to keep adventurous little people out of harm’s way. Many of our single storey designs offer flexibility on separate zones and additional Living areas.

Age

If there are older people living in the house, or this is your forever home and you want to plan ahead, then double storey designs become an important decision. Certain people may have difficulty walking up and down stairs every day, however this can largely be avoided with a downstairs Bedroom. Considering practical everyday Living for you and your Family at all stages of life.

Working from home

In today’s flexible work environment, the home office has gone from a desk in the spare room to a must-have zone for many families. Many of our single storey designs have Study Nook’s, whereas our double storey homes offer greater flexibility in terms of keeping the home office separate from high traffic areas or sleep zones, thus reducing the chances of anyone being disturbed.
